The Official Robert Munsch Website

The Official Robert Munsch Website

OK...this is a bit of a departure for this site. If you're a parent like me then you know who Robert Munsch is. If you're not a parent then this post probably isn't for you. The official RM site has much of what you would expect from a children's author website. But the bonus is that a great many of his stories are available as free mp3 downloads. This is perfect for parents who want to keep the kids quiet on roadtrips this holiday season. Download a bunch of the stories and burn them to cd.

ArnoCorps :: Arnold Schwarzenneger Tribute Band

ArnoCorps :: Arnold Schwarzenneger Tribute Band

Xeni at boingboing has this to say in her post about ArnoCorps:

Song lyrics are comprised of scripts from the Calilfornia governor's movies. The lead singer sings in a schwarzeneggeuro accent. This is wrong for so many reasons.

Oh, its wrong alright. The best part? ArnoCorps claims that all of Schwarzenneger's movies are based on ancient Austrian legends and they are launching a class action lawsuit for damages. Sweet!

OEM Radio :: Original Electronic Music Radio

OEM Radio - Original Electronic Music Radio

I'm on my own this week to program Squares Cubed so I've been doing extra research trying to find content for the show. One of my normal haunts, Oddio Overplay, pointed me in the direction of OEM Radio.

OEM radio is a new project that presents original electronic music recordings via a Shoutcastâ„¢ internet radio station. OEM Radio is a free, zero-profit endeavor. The radio stream broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year - free. The stream broadcasts at 128kbit, so you will need DSL, Cable Modem, or a faster connection in order to tune in. We are working on starting a lower bandwidth stream in the near future.

The music content is wide ranging in terms of genre: you will hear ambient, IDM, downtempo, breakbeat, nu-jazz, experimental, and many other not-so-easily categorized sounds. OEM Radio plays listening music rather than dance music. OEM Radio seeks to bring original electronic music and recording artists that may be underexposed to a wider audience.

The queue currently holds 682 tracks totaling 70 hours of original material.

Listen!

Radiohead :: Creep Flash Video

Radiohead :: Creep Flash Video

I'm not a huge fan of Radiohead but this video for an acoustic version of the song Creep is just too good to pass up. This is a great use of Flash. The only other uses I can see for this technology are for games and really annoying band websites. Oh...another great use for Flash, Homestar!

Aleksi Eeben :: The White Box

Aleksi Eeben - The White Box:

I spent far too much time in my teen years glued to my Commoder 64. I just couldn't tear myself away from Raid on Bungling Bay, Ghostbusters and Summer Olympics. If you have a similar story then this collection is for you. If not, give it a try anyways.

"Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. But it's his C64 equivalent of 'The White Album', the appropriately named 'The White Box', which sums up some of his borderline deviant SID-chip excursions over the previous few years."

DJ Riko :: Mashups

DK Riko:: Mashups

Further to yesterday's post I listened to some mashups by DJ Riko and I was really impressed. For those of you how may not have looked any farther than the holiday mixes I would encourage you to check out some of these tracks:

DJ Riko - Whistler's Delight (Full version)
Do you know how to whistle? People on the 22 tracks used in this number do. I've taken the whistling bit that was in the Latter Day Taints mix and extended it to almost seven minutes of whistling madness. If you're into playing "Name That Tune"/trainspotting, then enter the contest we're having to see who can name the most samples included in this track. To find out what you can win and how to enter, go to the News section.

DJ Riko - Breaks All Night
Boomtown Rats vs Sharaz

DJ Riko - Say Yes to Schooly
Schooly-D beats under a Yes acapella. Call it prog-hop

"The 'Pangea Republic' compilation is the lastest music and culture mixdown by the followers of acediamusic. The diversity of the artist backgrounds once again summons up a multi style sound collection, which incorporates compositions from BigBeat to House and FrickelSounds, composed and engineered by artists from Ukraine, France, Romania, USA and Germany."

Amateurs On Plastic: A Tribute to Teenbeat Records

Amateurs On Plastic: A Tribute to Teenbeat Records

From the Archive.org description:

"It was 1985 when a small cassette label began in the classrooms of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.

As of March 2002, TeenBeat's discography had grown to include over 300 items, including 7' records, CDs, posters, t-shirts and unavailable items and events as diverse and absurd as bricks, houses, injuries, and a Zenith Solid State Stereo.

On June 7th 1998, the TeenBeat Mailing List wa started has grown to its modest, but faithful, membership over just over 200 members.

It was 9:02 PM September 2nd 1999 when, I brought up the idea of a TeenBeat tribute album to the list. To be quite honest, I don't recall writing or sending that e-mail; it wasn't until exactly five months later on February 2nd, 2000 when Kent Burt (The Linger Effect) asked, 'what's up with the TeenBeat covers disc/ tape/ whatever??' that the compiling of the songs that would make up Amateurs on Plastic began. Completed and released in April of 2002,
it is now December 1st, 2004, over two years after the release of the tribute, and it sounds just as good now as it did then."
