I've been in a cinematic state of mind as I've been prowling the set of "Silent Hill" trying to snap some pics without much luck. deftype's ep, "Gemischtwaren", has the kind of vibe I'm hoping the movie will capture as the SH video game was quite creepy.

From the release notes:

"You can find a sort of mixture of lofi beats, electro, classical instruments,Hitchcock-Atmospheres, simulated acoustic percussions and much more. Sometimes some kind of melody appears from the background of filled dark cyberlogical streets. All in all, its not easily graspable in stylistic or genre-terms at all."

Internet Archive and Monotonik....these are two of my favourite things. I'm about to a add a third favourite thing, Kplecraft. Check out a snip from the bio:

"Here's what you need to know. Kplecraft consists of Kuske (Nintendo Game Boy with Nanoloop 1.2, saxophone, effects, etc.) and Eddie (percussion, conga, etc.) It is, more or less, a bleep side project of the Japanese jamband PCIA, in a similar way, perhaps, that Eat Static and Ozric Tentacles interact, and oddly enough, it's the blend of jamming and solid electronic beats that somewhat recall both of those bands, as well as other marvellous oddities like the Holistic Records crew from the Isle Of Wight."

Twin Cities Electropunk Volume 2

A worthy successor to Volume 1, TCEV2 features many of the same artists that made the first release such an incredible find plus some new artists that push the number of tracks to 16 as opposed to 10 on the first collection.

The driving force behind these two collections is Todd Millenacker aka Aven pitch, who leads off the compilation with the hyper-tempoed track "Jack The Idiot Dance." The stand out track for me, among the many other great ones, is "Broken Waters" (different mix than compilation track) by Endless Blue, a downtempo/triphop tune that really resonates. Reminiscent of early James, "Planting Flowers" by Tim Rally Gold is a guitar driven track that concentrates more on the punk of electropunk.

While plumbing the depths of archive.org's netlabel scene I found something that hits close to home. Very close to home. "live at CMFU - nybbl meets kawula [hc105]". Indeed this is a live recording from the very heart of Squares Cubed country released via hippocamp. Following the trail of breadcrumbs further lead me to bit_rock alumnae:

"The bit_rock alumnae is an informal collective of electronic music producers based in and around Toronto. We decided to get together during the winter of 2004 for the purposes of supporting each other, strengthening the local independent electronic scene, and trying to stay warm. All of us recognized the difficulties in finding an accepting audience for our music outside the rock and dance club scene, so we decided to join forces to make things happen."

At first listening I wasn't exactly sure how I felt about the music. I didn't like or dislike it. Only after a few more listens was I able to appreciate Mystechs deadly style of musical kung-fu. I could try to explain the sound but its much easier to just link to the tracks themselves.

I'm on my own this week to program Squares Cubed so I've been doing extra research trying to find content for the show. One of my normal haunts, Oddio Overplay, pointed me in the direction of OEM Radio.

OEM radio is a new project that presents original electronic music recordings via a Shoutcast™ internet radio station. OEM Radio is a free, zero-profit endeavor. The radio stream broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year - free. The stream broadcasts at 128kbit, so you will need DSL, Cable Modem, or a faster connection in order to tune in. We are working on starting a lower bandwidth stream in the near future.

The music content is wide ranging in terms of genre: you will hear ambient, IDM, downtempo, breakbeat, nu-jazz, experimental, and many other not-so-easily categorized sounds. OEM Radio plays listening music rather than dance music. OEM Radio seeks to bring original electronic music and recording artists that may be underexposed to a wider audience.

The queue currently holds 682 tracks totaling 70 hours of original material.

"It was 1985 when a small cassette label began in the classrooms of Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia.

As of March 2002, TeenBeat's discography had grown to include over 300 items, including 7' records, CDs, posters, t-shirts and unavailable items and events as diverse and absurd as bricks, houses, injuries, and a Zenith Solid State Stereo.

On June 7th 1998, the TeenBeat Mailing List wa started has grown to its modest, but faithful, membership over just over 200 members.

It was 9:02 PM September 2nd 1999 when, I brought up the idea of a TeenBeat tribute album to the list. To be quite honest, I don't recall writing or sending that e-mail; it wasn't until exactly five months later on February 2nd, 2000 when Kent Burt (The Linger Effect) asked, 'what's up with the TeenBeat covers disc/ tape/ whatever??' that the compiling of the songs that would make up Amateurs on Plastic began. Each goes his own way, inventing rhythmic and melodic patterns which, superficially, seem to have as little relevance to one another as the United Nations building does to the Empire State. And yet the outcome is a dazzlingly precise creative unity.

Since first emerging in the late '60s, Joe McPhee has been heralded as one of jazz's most talented multi-instrumentalists and greatest improvisers.

Many of McPhee's early recordings as a bandleader, including Underground Railroad (1969), Nation Time (1970), and Trinity (1971) (all originally on the obscure CjR label), are informed by the Black Power movement of the '60s and '70s. Underground Railroad, pointedly "dedicated to the black experience on planet Earth," virtually disappeared on impact, as only 500 copies were ever pressed, but thanks to Atavistic's "Unheard Music" series, it's available once again, along a special bonus section documenting McPhee's public debut on the tenor sax during an inspired afternoon performance with his larger group, the Contemporary Improvisational Ensemble, at the same New York monastery where he would record Underground Railroad six months later.

Driving in my car tonight I decided to tune into CFMU, McMaster University's radio station and homebase for Squares Cubed (Sorry about the pop ups...stupid domain redirect service). The program guide says that the show I was listening to was The Pop Narcotic and right away I was digging the tune that was playing. Some sort of "Eno-ish, Dan Lanois with Edge guitar licks thrown in" kinda music. Nice. First thing I do when I get home is call the station up and find out who I was listening to. Turns out it was a guy named Ulrich Schnauss. Never heard of him but thats what the internets are for ain't it? Unfortunately I forgot to ask for an actual song name so I'm outta luck on that score. Well Ulrich has a nice little site with more than enough tunes to whet my appetite for more.

Ulrich Schnauss was born in northern Germany fishing port Kiel in 1977, during his formative years he grew a love for a broad spectrum of music ranging from my bloody valentine to tangerine dream, chapterhouse to early bleep & breakbeat tracks.

Sundays + (Frente * Cardigans) / Norway = Ephemera. My math may be faulty (my high school math teacher once called me a loser, for real) but I'm pretty sure it adds up correctly when it comes to Ephemera. Catchy pop tunes matched with ethereal vocals. Enjoy.

The tale of Ephemera starts out sometime during the fall of ’94. Inger Lise Størksen (17), girlfriends Christine Sandtorv (18) and Jannicke Larsen assemble in a basement in hometown Bergen, Norway - to hit a few chords on borrowed guitars. The girls however, - being equally shy, - barely dare sing out in each other’s presence. Luckily the shyness soon evaporates - leaving nothing but Christine and Jannicke’s raw songwriter talent – and an immensely beautiful blend of voices.

Once again Archive.org delivers another gem in the form of Volga. I wish I could accurately describe the sound but I can't. Instead I'll list some artists that I like that Volga can be compared to: Bjork, Portishead, Annie Lennox and a little bit of Blade Runner soundtrack thrown in. These are just my impressions but its worth a listen. I'm sure it'll be the most interesting music you've never heard before whether you like it or not is another matter all together.

I was a Rheostatics fanatic back in the mid to late '90's and they still have a place in my heart but not quite so large as it used to. I was pleased to see Canada's finest rawk band have a new cd out entitled 2067 and available through Maple Music. Sadly I can find no mp3s to speak of but the official site has two Windows media videos. Hey beggars can't be choosers, at least it isn't Real Media.

I just found this in the new releases over at archive.org. Its not for everybody but if you're into experimental music that isn't all high-pitched squealing and banging on oil drums whilst torturing small animals than give this release a try.

cutting and pasting on her computer , her highness is like a 3 year old circus girl singing her songs to make all the kids laugh... she makes happy pop songs with samples she recorded using a cello , harmonium , a plastic clarinet and other toys. sometimes she even sprinkles tiny bits of midi on the top.

It took me a few minutes to get a grip on exactly what was going on with this music. Was this really Mick Fleetwood mashing up his own tunes with the aid of Bill Laswell and others? Perhaps Bowie wasn't the only major artist to see the artistic/commercial merit in mashing. Well its kinda Mick Fleetwood....I'll let the producer, Mashine Gun Kelly explain:

The great thing about this is that Mick Fleetwood IS actually playing drums on every track of Fleetwood Mash. So in essence he is in the band even though he does not know it. The other artists in Fleetwood Mash are also extremely talented and well known in the music industry, and they all released sample CDs of their musical artistry for sale for royalty-free use; and they too are all performing on every track of Fleetwood Mash.

In addition to the 10 tracks that are freely downloadable individually or in one zip file there is plenty of information on the mashup scene in general including links to other mashup sites and mashup FAQs. You don't have to be a fan of Fleetwood Mac or any of the other artists to be able to get into this music. It is very rhythm oriented with lots of fat bass and percussion and a bit more than a touch of dub.

granny'ark is michelle irving from vancouver (canada) who generally has several irons in the fire. these include making rather organic electronic music, delicate video visuals, some drawings, fine food, and lately geek-out sessions in max/msp. granny'ark is dedicated to a compositional approach which steps out of the loop de loop but also explores minimal techs better qualities.
